Dr Nikolas Sarris, book & paper conservator at the National Library of Greece, visited the Centre for Slavo-Byzantine Studies “Prof. Ivan Dujcev” in Sofia, Bulgaria, between the 12th to the 17th of February 2024, with the aim to provide a workshop on “Manuscript Bookbindings of the Eastern Mediterranean: conservation and research” to conservators and curators from various institutions of Bulgaria.

The workshop was organised as part of the Erasmus+ programme and the Accredited project for staff mobility on the sector of Adult Education at the NLG, in collaboration with the Balkan Heritage Foundation in Bulgaria. The attendees had a chance to work hands-on with the most appropriate examples from the Greek, Slavonic and Oriental manuscript collections of the Centre for Slavo-Byzantine Studies “Prof. Ivan Dujcev”, to practice describing manuscripts and their rare bindings, to analyze bookbinding features and damages across the collection and to discuss conservation methodologies in order to ensure the preservation of the manuscripts and to enhance their visibility and accessibility to the wider public through adult education activities.
